Roadblock ads in email zones

What are roadblocks

Roadblocks allow you to exclusively serve ads from similar campaigns over all the zones on that web page. Click this link to learn more about roadblocks.

How roadblocks operate

By influencing AdButler's scoring system that serves the ads, roadblocks are able to bypass the decision process.

When the ad tied to a roadblock tag comes up in the queue, it will look for other ad items with that same roadblock tag in order to fill the other zones on the page or newsletter. If there are no other ad items with the same roadblock tag, no other ads will be served.

Home Page Takeovers and newsletter takeovers are the most common use of roadblocks and are only possible by using a roadblock.

The roadblock is set by the first email zone loaded in the newsletter.

As JavaScript is disabled for newsletter zones, we rely on the Email Unique Identifier as the means of determining if mulitple zones are loaded from the same newsletter. This does emphasize the importance of ensuring that your Email Unique Identifier is truly unique so that no two users have the same EUID.

If your Email Unique Identifier is configured correctly, roadblocks will work without without requiring any modification or changes.

Using the same zone multiple times in a single newsletter

In circumstances where you want to use the same zone in a newsletter multiple times, you will need to add an extra parameter, known as "place" to the image portion of the email zone tag. The place= parameter should start at 0 for the first instance of the zone in your email, and increment by one for each subsequent placement.

Here's a normal email zone tag:

<!-- AdButler Email Zone [email] -->
<a href="https://servedbyadbutler.com/go2/;ID=180028;size=300x250;setID=466368;uid=Your Email Unique Identifier Here;click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER" target="_blank">
<img src="https://servedbyadbutler.com/adserve/;ID=180028;size=300x250;setID=466368;type=img;uid=Your Email Unique Identifier Here;" width="300" height="250"></a>

Here's the same email zone tag with the place parameter

<!-- AdButler Email Zone [email] -->
<a href="https://servedbyadbutler.com/go2/;ID=180028;size=300x250;setID=466368;uid=Your Email Unique Identifier Here;click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER" target="_blank">
<img src="https://servedbyadbutler.com/adserve/;ID=180028;size=300x250;place=0;setID=466368;type=img;uid=Your Email Unique Identifier Here;" width="300" height="250"></a>
If we were to place this same tag into the email a second time, we will need to increase the place to 1, like so:
<!-- AdButler Email Zone [email] -->
<a href="https://servedbyadbutler.com/go2/;ID=180028;size=300x250;setID=466368;uid=Your Email Unique Identifier Here;click=CLICK_MACRO_PLACEHOLDER" target="_blank">
<img src="https://servedbyadbutler.com/adserve/;ID=180028;size=300x250;place=1;setID=466368;type=img;uid=Your Email Unique Identifier Here;" width="300" height="250"></a>
