Creating a VAST ad item

VAST ad items

VAST ad items are video ads specifically designed to be played within a video player. VAST format allows AdButler to track exact metrics of user behaviour, such as how long someone watched the ad or if they muted it. VAST is the recognized format of video ads, and we are proud to support VAST 2.0 in AdButler. Below are the general steps for adding a VAST ad to a zone or campaign in AdButler:

When grabbing Zone Tags for VAST ads, to ensure reliable impression tracking, always use the https format, available in the Zone Tags menu. The need for SSL certificates also precludes VAST tags from being served by a custom domain.
  1. In the Advertiser VAST Campaign or VAST Zone of your choosing, click on "Add New..." under ad items.
  2. You are now in the VAST ad item menu. What steps follow depend on the kind of VAST ad you are creating.

To create a wrapper (3rd Party) VAST ad:

  1. In the VAST ad item menu, give your ad item a name. A click-through link is not necessary.
  2. Under Assets, check the checkbox "Use a Wrapper Ad".
  3. Under this, paste the wrapper ad URL from the 3rd Party.
  4. Scroll down and save the ad item.
  5. Assign the campaign to an applicable Publisher's zone (if you created the ad item in a campaign and not a zone).
  6. On the Zone page, click "Get Zone Tags". Make sure that "Protocol" is set to "https".
  7. Place the ad tag code in your video player according to its specifications.

To create a basic linear ad:

  1. In the VAST ad item summary menu, give your ad item a name and a click-through link.
  2. Go to the linear media tab, and under linear media files either upload a creative or link the URL to a hosted one.
Be sure to upload multiple media file types when creating a VAST ad item. Our VAST File Recommendations reference lists best practices. Uploading multiple files ensures that there will always be a file compatible with a client's browser.
  1. For non-linear ads, please ensure to upload your ad items via the media library. Although we do support externally hosted non-linear ad items, there are known compatibility issues with some player's policies
  2. Ensure that the file fills out the size, delivery, and MIME type. If not, ensure your file is correct, and fill the fields in manually.
  3. Scroll down and save the ad item.
  4. Assign the campaign to an applicable Publisher's zone (if you created the ad item in a campaign and not a zone).
  5. On the Zone page, click "Get Zone Tags". Make sure that "Protocol" is set to "https".
  6. Place the ad tag code in your video player according to its specifications.
