Adding tracking pixels

Sometimes when working with advertisers they'll want to track the ads performance in their own dashboard. There are a bunch of different ways to do it, including with tracking pixels. Luckily, integration is fast and easy in AdButler.

Tracking pixels basics

If you're looking to make and distribute tracking pixels with AdButler, you'll want to read our Manual Tracking Links article.

There are a few different types of tracking pixels out there and, depending on the kind you're working with, integration looks different. Broadly, tracking pixels break down into three categories: Impression, Click, and Conversion tracking pixels.

All three types are based on the same technology. When the pixel is loaded by a user, either through javascript or an HTML element, an event is recorded by server the pixel is connected to. Whether that event is an impression, click, or conversion depends on the pixel.

AdButler supports adding impression and click of pixels, as usually you want a conversion pixel to be hard coded into a page. Very rarely will advertisers request that you count conversions when your ad is seen or clicked on.

Most tracking pixels are passed along as urls, such as https://servedbyadbutler.com/adserve/pixel. Occasionally they'll come wrapped in HTML tags like <image>, and you can easily extract the pixel by taking the src= attribute.

Impression tracking pixels

Impression tracking pixels are almost all universially the same: a 1 pixel by 1 pixel image hosted on a server somewhere. The size, 1 pixel by 1 pixel, is where the convention came to refer to the tracking technology as a "pixel".

Most impression tracking pixels are placed on a page via a HTML <image> tag, which loads the pixel whenever someone visits the web page. AdButler uses the same technology and places the pixel on the page whenever the ad item is loaded.

Adding an impression tracking pixel

  1. Create a new Ad Item, or open an existing Ad Item in AdButler.
  2. Scroll down to the Tracking pixel field.
  3. Paste the Impression Tracking Pixel into the field.
  4. Finish making any other changes to the ad item, and click the Save button to update the ad item.

Click tracking pixels

AdButler currently supports adding click tracking pixels that also as a redirect. These pixels record clicks the same way that AdButler does, by first sending the user to their own server before sending them to the final destination.

If your advertiser has given you a 200 click tracking link, that will require custom implementation. Please contact AdButler support and we'll help you with that.

Adding a click tracking pixel

  1. Create a new Ad Item, or open an existing Ad Item in AdButler.
  2. Scroll down to the Destination field.
  3. Paste the Click tracking pixel into the field.
  4. Finish making any other changes to the ad item, and click the Save button to update the ad item.
